With the implementation of the Goldwater Nichols Act of 1986, COCOM Commanders attained a unalienable command authority over different service forces directly to the depository of Defense. Today there are 6 Geographic commanders consisting of the newest member the United States Africa Command (USAFRICOM), U.S. primaeval Command (USCENTCOM), U.S. European Command (USEUCOM), U.S. Northern Command (USNORTHCOM), U.S. Pacific Command (USPACOM), and U.S. Southern Command (USSOUTHCOM).There has been a evidentiary amount of criticism and arguments over the structuring and organization of the Combatant Comma nders. Arguments have been make over personnel and budget restraints to peacetime efforts and the need for continued assistance. This Essay will analyze the COCOM structure using a SWOT analysis to shade at both the internal and external points of the different commands and the overall set up the COCOM has on the world.
